Leahy speaks out on mayoral sweeps

Thanks to Senior Writer Jennifer Myers for this latest bit of news on Lowell’s mayoral battle — not!

Mayor Murphy or Mayor Elliott?

How about Mayor Martin?

Outgoing School Committee member John Leahy said Wednesday he ran into City Councilor Bill Martin at a party at School Committee member Connie Martin’s house and pushed the coy councilor to spill the beans regarding who he plans to vote for in the mayoral sweepstakes, which still haven’t been officially settled.

Leahy told Martin, in his opinion, the mayor (who also chairs the School Committee) needs to be experienced, given the committee will have three freshmen members.

He urged Martin, if he is not going to vote for Councilor Rodney Elliott, to vote for himself. Martin served as mayor in the 2006-2007 term.

“He was a great mayor,” Leahy said of Martin.

The suggestion, however, did not sit well with Martin’s wife Martha, who immediately put the kibosh on any such idea.

Martin has yet to publicly reveal who he is supporting for mayor, but all signs point to Patrick Murphy, who is completing his inaugural council term, over Rodney Elliott, who was first elected in 1997 and is fast-approaching nearly two decades of City Council membership.
